DPW #012: How to Create a Canva Template
A general step-by-step process to creating any kind of template for Canva.
Welcome to the twelfth edition of Digital Products Weekly.
Last week we looked at creating a resource collection.
The votes are in, this week we will create a Canva template.
Eventually, we will get to creating specific types of Canva templates, but today I wanted to dive into a general breakdown of creating any type of template for Canva.
Let’s get to it!

Canva Template Recipe
Step 1 - Pick a type of template.
Canva has become so versatile, that you can create many different templates including:
Emails
Resumes
Websites
Presentations
Business Cards
YouTube Graphics
Social Media Posts
E-commerce Graphics
Start with one, and you can expand to others later.
Step 2 - Sketch it out.
I always find it easier to use pen and paper to get my initial concept for the template out of my mind.
Then you can make adjustments to get it right before creating it digitally.
Step 3 - Design it in Canva.
Now that you have your sketch it should be pretty quick to make the design in Canva. Make sure that you use placeholder pictures and words if needed.
Make it as simple for people to use as possible.
Step 4 - Save it as a template.
Canva makes this really easy.
Just follow these steps:
Click the “Share” button on the top right.
Click “Template link” in the popup menu.
Click the “Create template link” button.
Copy the link to your template.
Step 5 - Create your listing.
You can now use a platform like Gumroad, Kit, Lemonsqueezy, Pensight, Payhip, or most other e-commerce solutions.
Once someone has paid for it (or provided their email if you’re using it as a lead magnet) you can then share the link with them so that they can use the template.
